The first ceiling fans were seen in the United States in the 1860’s. However, instead of being powered by electricity, they were powered by a stream of running water, turbines and belts.

In June of 1889 a man by the name of Phillip Diehl applied for a patent, which was granted in November of that year (414757) whereby he applied an electric motor to a ceiling fan and also created a way to continuously keep the fan shaft oiled without dripping any oil. This was a major breakthrough in the growth of the ceiling fan industry.

Diehl continued to develop his new and innovating his ceiling fan designs. Some of the improvements that he made on his original idea included reducing the size of the motor as well as adding electric lights. In the 1920's these creations were found in many homes and businesses around the country. Ceiling fans now began to be distributed in around the world.

T he basic theory behind the ceiling fan is relatively simply, rotate fan blade, create a breeze, make the air cooler. In the case of the modern ceiling fan we use an enclosed electric motor to turn the blades of our fan. By increasing the pitch of the blades and/or the speed of the motor we control the flow of air and the comfort level in our room. Depending on the size of the room you need to cool you will need varying sizes of blades. For a small room such as a 10’ x 10’ room you would use a 36” blade, whereas a large room such as 20’ x 20’ would require a 54” blade. The blades themselves are mounted at a 12 to 15 degree angle, allowing for proper circulation of the air in the room.

Many improvements have been made over the years. Some of these improvements include using 4 or 5 fan blades on a fan. With the added number of blades comes the problem of wobble. This is a major difference between your typical department store ceiling fans and a quality fan such as the Casablanca ceiling fan. With the Casablanca ceiling fans you have more choice in mounting positions, more durable and longer lasting blades, motors and other components, quieter operation, better movement of the air, support after the sale, and virtually no noticeable fan wobble.

Although most people think of a ceiling fan as an indoor appliance, they also make special ceiling fans for outside, such as patios, gazebos, etc. The purpose of the outdoor fan is two fold. One they do create a pleasant air flow even outside, and two this airflow keeps the flying insects away, creating a relaxing and stress free environment.

Ceiling fans can be used year round. By flipping the rotation switch on the body of the fan motor you can create a downward airflow in summer or an upward air flow in winter. This will effectively decrease the temperature in the room in the summer and increase the temperature in the room in winter. The end result is not only being more comfortable in your own home, but also a substantial savings in electricity and gas.
